WISE - - The start of UVa-Wise freshman Nate Thompson's collegiate career did not go unnoticed as the Wise, Va. native was named Mountain East Conference Freshman of the Year and All-MEC Second-Team as a utility player and as a relief pitcher.
The Central High School product did it all for the Cavaliers this spring as he posted a 1.65 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 32 2/3 innings pitched this spring. Thompson made nine appearances for UVa-Wise on the mound, including five starts. The right-hander hurled a complete game four-hitter against West Virginia Wesleyan in his final home start of the year while adding five strikeouts in the win.
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound hurler added a pair of saves while limiting opponents to a .207 batting average in his first collegiate season.
At the plate, Thompson led UVa-Wise with a .328 batting average while adding nine extra-base hits and slugging .433. The utility man spent time at all three outfield positions, designated hitter and first base during the year and posted a team-high nine-game hitting streak from April 9 – April 25.
Thompson was the only player selected to earn All-Conference accolades at two different positons and is the first baseball player at UVa-Wise to accomplish the feat. Additionally, he's the second player in program history to earn Freshman of the Year accolades by a conference.
