Madisonville, TN | The Hiwassee College Men's Soccer Team opened up their season this past Labor Day Weekend. On Friday, September 1st, the Tigers hosted Boyce College. Both teams were eager to gain their first win of the season. In the end , the Tigers came out triumphant with a winning score of 2-0.
The atmosphere was ecstatic. It was also a great day for one Tiger in particular. Nathan Johnson, Center Attacking Midfielder, scored his first career goal. When asked about this memorable moment and game, Nathan says, "The team wanted to come out strong, press high and control the ball. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. When Collin Pitman dropped the ball to me, I was open for the easy tap in. The team continued to play well after the goal and we were able to add another goal in the second half to secure the first win of the season."
Three days later, still on a high from the season opener, the Hiwassee College Men's Soccer Team hosted Oakwood University on Monday, September 4th. Oakwood came ready to play but it was no match for the Tigers. The tigers were victorious with a score of 3-1. The tigers are happy about their early success but understand that there is always room for improvement. Center Back, Juan Ramirez elaborates, "I am happy we obtained a second victory as we want to make a difference this year. However, the team play is not where we want it yet and we hope to get stronger on the field. I believe we have to work on our defensive form and the transition from defense to attack. We have great aspirations this season and the first games are a must win in our calendar."
The tigers are back in action on September 9th against Warren Wilson.
